New Publication on Social Policy in Autocracies
Why does social policy vary across authoritarian regimes? In his recent article, “All that is left is all that matters: the politics of social spending in authoritarian regimes”, published in Democratization, Angelo Vito Panaro examines the extent to which (a) the presence of de jure multiparty elections, (b) the size of the ruling coalition, and (c) the political ideology of the government affect public social spending in autocracies. The findings reveal that the government’s ideological orientation, rather than political institutions, plays a significant role in shaping social policy decisions in authoritarian contexts.
