Current Debate on Migration and Asylum: Article by Prof. Dr. Bendel and Renowned Scholars
In the recent article “Why a Migration Policy of Hardship Will Fail”, published on April 11, 2025, by SPIEGEL, Prof. Dr. Petra Bendel and further renowned scholars analyze current political debates in the context of the coalition agreement. They issue a strong warning against a “fact-resistant panic policy of harshness” and call for a return on human rights-based migration policy and sustainable solutions based on European solidarity.
The scholars highlight that many of the political measures currently being discussed—such as restricting the right to individual asylum or outsourcing asylum procedures to third countries—not only raise legal concerns but also point in the wrong direction in terms of integration and social coherence. Instead, they advocate for long-term strengthening of local infrastructures, safe and legal pathways to migration, and an evidence-based debate on migration.
