Alumni Event: ‘Political Science as a Calling’ 2024
Report on the Event ‘JobInsights Live: Political Science as a Calling’ at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg, 07 November 2024
On the evening of November 7, numerous political science students gathered in PSG III, Kochstraße 6a at FAU to explore potential career paths in their field. The event, ‘JobInsights Live: Political Science as a Calling’, (Politikwissenschaft als Berufung) organized by the Political Science Alumni Association Erlangen e.V. (APE) and the FAU Alumni Service, offered valuable insights into the diverse career opportunities available to political science graduates. Three FAU alumni returned to their alma mater to share their professional journeys, provide practical advice, and discuss prospects for students’ future careers.
The evening’s guest speakers included:
- Sophia Brostean-Kaiser, Research Associate in Education, Mediation, and Inclusion at the Memorium Nuremberg Trials,
- Andrea Buheitel, Research Associate in the parliamentary office of Member of Parliament Johann Wadephul (CDU/CSU), who joined via Zoom from Berlin,
- Christian Wolff, Head of the Social Media Team at the Bavarian State Ministry of Health, Care and Prevention.
Each speaker highlighted a unique aspect of the professional field. Sophia Brostean-Kaiser spoke vividly about the challenges within educational outreach, especially on the path to securing a permanent position in a historically focused educational institution. She emphasized the importance of perseverance and clear goal orientation in succeeding within a competitive environment. Andrea Buheitel, speaking from her office in Berlin, provided engaging insights into her day-to-day responsibilities in the political sphere, detailing the complex tasks involved in providing research and strategic support for a parliamentary representative, which demand flexibility and analytical skills. Christian Wolff shared his experiences in the field of social media marketing and the various requirements associated with digital communications work in a government ministry. He highlighted how dynamic this sector has become and underscored the importance of staying current with trends, gaining work experience, and adapting to constantly evolving challenges.
The event was characterized by a lively and interactive atmosphere. After the presentations, students seized the opportunity to ask questions, gaining targeted insights into the work environments and unique aspects of each profession. The openness of the alumni and their willingness to share personal experiences and advice contributed to a vibrant discussion, which continued during the social gathering over refreshments.
The strong turnout and high level of engagement demonstrated the value of such events in facilitating exchanges between the various ‘generations’ of FAU political science students. The Political Science Alumni Association Erlangen e.V. expressed great satisfaction with the positive response and plans to offer similar events in the future to encourage dialogue and networking among students and experienced professionals.
